Christmas concepts 4: Dr Jarvis Kellerman

So far in the Christmas concepts art series, we’ve dealt with the good guys: the heroes of The Lazarus War. Today the fourth piece is a little darker. Allow me to introduce Dr Jarvis Kellerman…

When we first learn of Dr Kellerman, he is the supervisor and scientific director of the project on Helios – a planet within the Maelstrom, and part of the Krell Empire. He’s been operating behind enemy lines, attempting to harness the power of the mysterious Artefact. But has that power gone to his head? And why would a previously acclaimed scientist choose a life of voluntary isolation? On their arrival on Helios, Captain Harris must answer those questions, and decide whether Kellerman is friend or foe…

Dr Kellerman was one of my favourite characters to write. He only featured in Artefact (if you’ve read it, you’ll understand exactly why he wasn’t coming back!) but he was a perfect balance to Harris. Harris and his squad represented the lighter side of the Alliance, whereas Kellerman represented the corrupting influence of too much power. But in other ways, Harris and Kellerman are just reflections of each other. Each is obsessed with a singular goal, and each is willing to neglect other aspects of life in order to achieve his mission.

I think this art piece is one of the best in the series. It really epitomises the whole “evil doctor” vibe I was going for, while telling you a little bit about the world in which the character lives as well (his hover chair suggests advanced technology, while his arm patch demonstrates that the USA – or the UA, in my books – is still a political authority).

So that’s day four in the series. Tomorrow’s concept stays in the scientific vein, but we’re taking a detour into lighter territory…
