A seriously superhero-flavoured broadcast this week…

Newscast 1: BATMAN V SUPERMAN – DAWN OF JUSTICE trailer leaked!

A couple of days ago, a very shaky version of the DAWN OF JUSTICE trailer was leaked online. Apparently leaked from a Brazilian source, it was very quickly removed from Youtube and the offending website. Warner Brothers’ initial intent was to release the footage via IMAX, on 20th April – but this leak has accelerated the plan. WB has now officially released the trailer…

It’s an interesting and potentially unique approach to the superhero genre and there are obvious attempts in this (very short) trailer to address many of the criticisms aimed at MAN OF STEEL. Many commentators were disappointed by Snyder’s “dark” take on Superman; critics argued that his wanton destruction of downtown Metropolis failed to reflect Superman’s core tenet of protecting human life. This trailer is obviously building on that – it almost feels inspired by the INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US setting. I’m officially intrigued…

Newscast 2: Michelle McLaren leaves WONDER WOMAN project

Lynda Carter Wonder Woman Gal Gadot Wonder WomanEarlier in the week, it was revealed that Michelle McLaren had stepped away from the upcoming WONDER WOMAN film. This was a surprise, given that it seemed WB were very behind her as a director. IGN reports that McLaren envisaged a more “action-heavy” and “Braveheart” style origin story; the studio, however, wanted a more character-driven film…

The WONDER WOMAN project has met with similar losses over the years, and even previous clashes of vision.

My 50 cents? WONDER WOMAN is going to be a tough film to make. It’s going to be hard to make her relevant to a modern audience. This is a shame – there really aren’t enough superhero movies with central female characters, let alone leads – and I really do want to see this succeed. But the cancelled WONDER WOMAN TV series (which starred, for a single episode, Adrianne Palicki) demonstrates that, at least in 2011, the studio had some pretty wacky ideas about how the WW franchise should develop…

MONSTER director Patty Jenkins is now reported to have taken over the role.

Newscast 3: New STAR WARS trailer

This one really doesn’t need an introduction…

As Spiderman would say, “My nostalgia senses are tingling…”

Newscast 4: New ANT-MAN trailer

This really has been a good week for superhero films, and Paul Rudd’s ANT-MAN is another fine example of the Marvel template!

ANT-MAN looks to walk the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY trail: basically following the comic book, but with a healthy dose of irreverence and a little humour… I especially love the Thomas the Tank Engine scene at the end!

Newscast 5: Ryan Gosling cast in BLADE RUNNER 2

Not much to report on this, but – like some sort of alien sponge – I’m absorbing any and all information on the upcoming BLADE RUNNER project… Gosling has just been cast in the film. At present his role is unknown. I’m not sure how I feel about this: the memory of Shia LeBeouf “taking over” from Ford in INDIANA JONES & THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL is still a sore one.
